University of Missouri Extension Program Promotes Healthy Choice the Easy Choice
Columbia, MO – October 5, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Nowadays, Americans are facing obesity issues due to low physical ability and huge intake of unhealthy foods. According to the National Cancer Institute, the country does not have enough imports of vegetables and fruits to meet the daily requirements of every American. Now, University of Missouri Extension has been given a national grant to expand its 2 programs that promote physical activity and a healthy diet for Missourians.
This grant came from the Center for Disease Control & Prevention and the U.S Department of Health & Human Services funds that is developed to provide support and tools to hospitals, schools, and other institutions that also uses local produces in their cafeterias.
The Missouri Farm to institution to School/Farm Project ties the different institution and schools with the local distributors and farmers to promote the buying and serving of local produces to the community. This program also includes the implementation of a food service guide wherein information about purchasing local produce in season to avail of the best price and guidelines on preparing and storing fresh produce.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of eating fresh local produce, Missouri Farms to schools makes it possible to inform the students how foods are grown and where it actually comes from. Students who also try the new food made from the local produce and liked it will probably ask the same food at home which then, will encourage the family to eat the healthy dishes more often.
The month of October is the official month for the National Farm to School. It is enacted in 2010 by the U.S Congress; the National Farm to School Month acknowledges the big role that Missouri Farms to school programs play in encouraging physical wellness and a good economy. There are over 2,300 Farm to School programs that exist across the country. Missouri has 78 school districts that already use local produce. For October, success stories of schools will be featured on the official website of Missouri Farm to School so every family are encouraged to share photos of their local produce or homemade meals.
