University of Missouri New Nursing Room Provides Safety Training Space for Students
Columbia, MO – November 25, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Nursing is 1 of the 7 professions reported to have the many on-the-job injuries, as stated by the U.S. Department of Labor. Strains and sprains due to over work accounts for most of the injuries. Those injuries are usually caused by improper handling, lifting & moving of patients. Now, University of Missouri nursing students have a new facility to guide them in developing their skills in keeping their patients and themselves safe.
The place used to be Sinclair School of nursing unused locker room and now converted into the nursing safe practices room. This is funded by an anonymous donor who donated $300,000. It is a part of the Essig Simulation Lab, a safe practices room that provide room for students to perform communication “handoffs” medication safety, moving and lifting patients. The new nursing room provides transfer stations with specialized carrying equipment and a bariatric (obese) mannequin. Bathroom & shower area is also included for the students to also learn how to safely move their patients.
Gretchen Gregory, an instructor of nursing, says hospitals carry out safety simulation with their nurses using alike facilities so the safe practices room can be used by the students to practice before they actually enter the field.
A senior nursing student also said that the room will make them more familiar with the proper procedure and equipment and avoid mistakes in the future that may harm their patients or themselves. Continuous use of the room for practice will also allow them to practice their safety skills with no real-life consequences. Actual practices included in their curriculum goes just teaching student safe practices.
Associate professor of nursing, Gregory & Myra Aud, utilize the practice room for clinical simulations not just with nursing students but also students in other health professions as well such as pharmacology, respiratory therapy, & medicine. During their simulations, every student works together to determine, solve, and prevent safety issues.
This nursing room is 1 of the 1st of its kind at a nursing school in the country.
