Blunt Introduces Bill to Cut Waste and Improve Housing Programs for Missouri Veterans, Seniors, and Families

-

WASHINGTON – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), along with Senators Bob Menendez (N.J.), Tim Scott (S.C.), and Chris Coons (Del.), introduced the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act. The bill reforms and streamlines housing programs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Housing Service.

“Our nation’s housing programs are in desperate need of real reform to protect taxpayers and better address the needs of low-income families, veterans, and seniors,” Blunt said. “This bipartisan bill is a step in the right direction. It would cut costs by millions, ensure that veterans have fair access to housing and homeless assistance programs, encourage work, improve opportunity for low-income families, and reduce homelessness. I hope all of my colleagues will support the bill, and work with us to help ensure that more Americans have a safe, affordable place to call home.”

The House companion measure, which was introduced by Missouri Congressmen Blaine Luetkemeyer and Emanuel Cleaver, II, passed unanimously on February 2, 2016.

Luetkemeyer continued, “As the House of Representatives proved earlier this year, there is an overwhelming desire to break the trend of failed federal housing policies and enact real reforms to the programs and processes at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Housing Service. I want to thank Senator Blunt for supporting this legislation in the United States Senate where it is my hope the upper chamber will follow the House’s lead and unanimously support taking the first step to changing our nation’s housing policies.”

Cleaver added, “The Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act is an example of successful bi-partisan efforts. By working together we can change our nation’s housing policies providing safe and affordable homes for all Americans.”
