Supportive Services, Housing For Veterans Expanding at St. Michael’s Veterans Center

KANSAS CITY, MO – December 15, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Groundbreaking for St. Michael’s Veterans Center Phase II, which includes a 7,000-square-foot service center open to all area veterans, is set for Tuesday, December 15, at 9:00 a.m. on the campus at 3838 Chelsea Drive, Kansas City, MO.

“Catholic Charities helps veterans who are in need of stable housing, employment and other services in Kansas City and throughout Northwest Missouri,” said Deacon Dan Powers, CEO of Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. “We are looking forward to expanding this important work by providing opportunities for all area veterans, not just residents, to reintegrate with their families and communities.”

Permanent, affordable housing is the foundation of the St. Michael’s model. Phase II includes 59 additional apartments for veterans struggling with homelessness. It is funded, in part, by an $8.3 million investment from U.S. Bank.

“The second phase of St. Michael’s Veterans Center is so very important to Kansas City and our efforts to care for those who have served their country through military duty. We owe a debt of caring to our veterans and this expansion is one more vital step along the march to meeting our commitment to our service members,” said Lynn Craghead, senior vice president of U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, a division of U.S. Bank that invested in both phases of St. Michael’s construction.

As developer and managing general partner of St. Michael’s Veterans Center, Yarco Company Inc. will oversee daily operation of the project, made possible by an unprecedented coalition of community partners.

“We’re very pleased to be developing this campus through the cooperative efforts of more than 4 dozen public agencies, community partners, and Missouri-based private firms,” said Jonathon Cohn, CEO, The Yarco Companies. “St. Michael’s strengthens our community by creating jobs, affordable housing, sustainable real estate, and by serving our veterans in need.”

Since opening in June 2014, St. Michael’s Veterans Center Phase I has been fully leased, with a waiting list of about 95 applicants. More than 90% of residents have achieved at least 12 months of housing stability and 77% of residents have engaged in the support services coordinated by Catholic Charities.

“Four things make St. Michael’s successful,” said Eric Verzola, Catholic Charities Director of Veterans Services. “It’s housing first. It’s wraparound support services. It’s public and private partnerships. But here’s what makes us different: we have veterans working with veterans. We know their stories. They could be us.”
