October 25, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — In cities across the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, housing production continues to climb in 2012 with the total permit number coming in as the highest since 2008, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. September single family permits increased sharply to 379 over 202 single family permits the same month in 2011. Year to date total permits are the highest in three years with 3,419 permits compared to 2011 with 2,304. In 2008 total number of permits issued year to date was 4,136.
“We saw that the national numbers had improved and are pleased that the local housing numbers are following suit,” said Executive Vice President Sara Corless. “It is possible the spike occurred in September because some building code changes took affect October 1, but other indicators are showing a rebound may be underway. For example, national numbers reflect an 11 percent overall gain in new-home construction in September across both the single- and multifamily sectors plus a builder confidence survey is reflecting the best numbers in six years.”
Six counties have increased year to date in September with the highest increases in Platte County up by 123 percent, Clay County up by 83 percent, and Johnson County up by 42 percent. Top cities ranked by number of single family units year to date are Kansas City with 519, Olathe with 318, Overland Park with 276, Lee’s Summit with 195, Platte County with 118 and Shawnee with 105.
