University of Missouri Phelps County Extension Now Accepting Class Applications for Volunteer Training with Master Gardeners for Spring 2012

Columbia, MO – March 7, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — The University of Missouri Phelps County Extension started a volunteer training program with their Master Gardeners in 1997. Now in its 15th year, the program has opened again to accept applications for Spring 2012.

Master Gardeners of the University of Missouri Phelps County Extensionestablished the program in 1997 to provide advice and training for volunteers about gardening as well as environmental horticulture. The program was also designed to engage volunteers in different projects that offer educational service.

The course requires 30 hours of the complete and an additional thirty hours more are required from volunteers to work in projects approved by the University of Missouri extension. Upon completion of the course, volunteers are given certification as Master Gardeners. Recertification may be achieved either by pursuing advanced continuous education and/or participating in related volunteer projects.

The program for Spring 2012 will commence on March 13, 2012 (Tuesday) and with class schedules slated at 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on a weekly basis. The last day of classes will be on May 1, 2012. All classes will be offered at the Fellowship Hall of Rolla’s Baptist Church. A half-hour lunch break is included in every class, and although some refreshments would also be offered volunteers are also invited to bring their own lunches.

Course tuition is priced at $200 plus another $50 that is reimbursable upon completion of the course as well as the requisite thirty hours of volunteer service in approved community projects of the Phelps County Master Gardeners.

For those unable to complete the requirements for volunteer work, they may pay a slightly more expensive tuition rate of $250. Participants will receive a training manual together with other course materials that would be distributed when needed.

In the previous year, projects of the University of Missouri Extension Phelps County Master Gardeners were able to benefit from more than 3,000 hours of volunteer service from training participant and which amounts to approximately $47,000 of savings.
