Attorney General Koster sues to stop mortgage-refinancing telemarketer from calling Missourians on the no-call list

Jefferson City, MO – May 27, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Attorney General Chris Koster today filed suit to stop a mortgage-refinancing company from calling and soliciting business from Missourians who had previously placed their names on the state’s No-Call List. This suit against a mortgage-refinancing company continues the Attorney General’s zero-tolerance stance against illegal mortgage operations, and is the fifth suit against a company offering mortgage refinancing or foreclosure relief since April 6.

Koster said his action is against SJS Investments, LLC, and A & J Mortgage Brokers, Inc. d/b/a (doing business as) Equity One Mortgage. The companies operate their businesses out of St. Peters and Hillsboro, Missouri.

According to the Attorney General the businesses illegally made calls to Missourians who were on the state’s no-call list, trying to solicit customers for mortgage-refinancing. The Attorney General is seeking an order forcing them to comply with Missouri law, and requiring them to pay penalties.

“Missouri law clearly protects residents from receiving unwanted calls from companies they have no established business relationship with,” Koster said. “We will continue to aggressively pursue businesses that harass customers with unwanted phone calls, taking action to force them to stop as well as pay penalties for violating Missouri law.”

The Attorney General reminds Missourians they can sign up for the Do-Not-Call hotline on his website at ago.mo.gov or by calling 1-866-662-2551. He encourages consumers who receive harassing solicitation calls to file a complaint at 1-800-buzzoff (1-800-289-9633).

Inquiries from consumers should be directed to or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).

All media inquiries should be directed to the Communications Office.
